Regents Canal

Regents Canal

March 20, 2009

From somewhere I got in my head to explore the canals of London. I am a big canal fan. It was on my list of things to do. Today while walking to the extreme in finding the Chisenhale Gallery I came upon this canal and the Ford Street Locks. It is right next to the Victoria Gardens (reputed to be one of the finest in London but rarely visited by tourists). The buildings to the right housed the horses that pulled the barges up and down the canal along the flanking towpath. London has rediscovered this treasured leftover and has developed the network for leisure ( http://www.waterscape.com ). I intend to discover the canal system in greater depth this weekend.
The Chisendale Gallery is a huge space in a gargantuan building that was for 40 years a veneer factory and during WWII manufactured propellers for Spitfires. Now save the performance spaces and dance studios, it is derelict with broken windows and ghosts I am sure.
